You’ve been told it’s easy to get started as an affiliate, and it is – sort of. It is the easiest business you can possibly start, but “easier” doesn’t mean “easy”.

The worst part is that the information you’ve received is all wrong. You’re told to pick one or more products to promote, by also finding their associated keywords carefully. Then to use keyword-based advertising to send visitors to the product, and just enjoy the commissions.  Sorry to burst your bubble, this just won’t work!

Think about this: What’s the biggest reason millions of people log onto the internet each day? You probably already guessed that it’s to find information. Information seeking is so huge that Google alone hosts 400,000,000 searches every day! OK, so what’s it to you? It means that you have a massive opportunity to give people exactly what they’re looking for – information. And when done correctly, you can get paid for it, too!

This is by far the simplest business you can start. You develop a product that is nothing more than information. And people pay you for the information inside it.. It couldn’t get much simpler.

How do you make it work?

You’ve got the basic concept – exchange info for money. In order to be successful there has to be value in the info you’re selling. So you’ll need to find out what info is valuable. How do you do that?

Yes affiliate marketing rocks, but it’s really hard to get started. The reason is because there is a lot of competition. What you need to do is come up with methods no one else is using. And the sea of information about this doesn’t make it any easier. Well, here’s on simple thing you can do that will put you ahead of the game.

Video marketing

You can’t deny that video is powerful. Video online is everywhere because people love it. It’s so much easier to keep people’s attention with video. So you can put this to great advantage in your affiliate marketing.

Examples of how to use video for affiliate marketing:

  • Do a testimonial video
  • Do a video walk-through
  • Record the order process
  • Do a preview video

Do a testimonial video

This one is super simple. Just click record on your web cam and start talking. It doesn’t have to be professional or polished. Just seeing another real person endorsing a product helps your viewers decide to buy. And honestly, if you mess up it just makes it seem more authentic. So serious, just turn on the camera and talk. And if you don’t want to show your face, use one of the next ideas.

Walk-throughs

This one is a little more subtle. Basically you’re doing a tutorial on how to use the product. And in the process you’re actually selling the product. If the product is useful, watching the tutorial makes them want to buy it. So just make sure you’re demoing a good product.

This is a great way to build value. In this case you record a screen share of the inside of the product. You show them the entire contents of what they get. It also reduces the reservations of skeptics. Once they’ve seen the back-end, they know it’s real.

Email List Building Strategies

Honestly, everyone making money online has an email list. It’s the one thing above all else that matters most. After it’s built, it’s yours to use any time you want. It’s like a renewable resource that allows you to make money on demand.

OK, but how?

Here are the three components of list building:

  • The Squeeze Page
  • Your Bribe
  • The Thank You Page

Your Landing Page – The landing page is the page that has your opt-in form on it. This is where they will enter their email address. This page needs to look professional. And have an easy to understand opt-in form. And have a clear call to action.

Failure to include a great “call to action” will result in failure. Your call to action tells the visitor what to do. And if you don’t include it, they won’t opt in. The funny thing is that people just don’t know what to do unless you tell them.

If you want to add some extra juice to your opt-in page add a video to it. This will grab your visitors attention and keep it. It also allows you to tell them what to do several times. And after the video, you can make it just say “fill in the form now”.

Now, don’t worry if you have no idea how to make videos. You can hire freelancers to do this for you for a few hundred dollars. You can also find ready-made list building tools that include video squeeze pages.

The Incentive – The next thing you need is an incentive to subscribe to your list. People need a good reason to part with their email address. Email privacy is very important to most people. So you have to give them a good reason to do it.

The only way to make this work is to provide real value. It has to be something that people actually want. And something from which they can derive a benefit. For example:

  • A free report
  • Software
  • A video tutorial
  • An email series

Basically, you just need some content. It’s got to be something helpful for your new subscribers. It goes without saying it must be free. If you make it good enough, they will give you their email in exchange.

Once again, don’t worry if you don’t know how to create the freebie. You can just pay someone else to make it for you. Just give them a topic and they will write the content. A 5-part email series is a good freebie. Each email will cost between $20 and $25. So, you’ll get the whole series written for under $150.

Or again, you can find complete list building packages for sale online that include an email series. Two things to keep in mind when writing (or buying) and email training series. First, it must provide value to your subscribers. And second, it needs to make you money. The easiest way to do this is to market affiliate products in the emails. This is such a simple solution because you don’t have to create the product. And it enables you to generate cash right away from your new list.

Your Confirmation Page – The “thank you” page is the final piece of the puzzle. This is where your visitor goes after opting into your list. It’s a great idea to give them some valuable information right on the thank you page. This helps them feel they’ve made the right decision giving you their email. It also sets the foundation for your relationship with them. It also makes them more likely to open your emails.

This is another case where you can get a complete marketing package. You can also put the whole thing together on your own. And write it all yourself. Or have someone ghost write for you.

Preselling for profit

The number one strategy to increase your affiliate sales is preselling.

First, what is preselling? Well, it is an art. And it’s also a science. It’s a process of taking your reader and getting them ready to buy. Then when they’re ready, refer them to the product website so they can buy it. When done correctly, your reader will not even notice.

The issue is that you give your reader some useful information. And then refer them to the product website. In a second we’ll talk about how to do actually it. But before we do, you need to know why it’s so important. Some major benefits of this process:

  • It builds trust – Readers who trust you are more likely to click your links. And the more clicks you get the more sales you’ll make.
  • It takes your reader out of defense mode – When you’re not hyping or pitching a product, your reader lets their guard down. And in turn they read to understand what you’re saying. So your content get absorbed.
  • It creates buying readiness – Your readers are now receiving your message. And in turn, they’re open to other messages, as well. For example, the sales message on the page you’re linking to. Sending them to the sales page in this state makes them more receptive to the actual pitch.
  • It increases your sales – Now your reader arrives at the sales page in a buying mood. With the guard down and trusting your recommendation. This dramatically boosts your sales rate!
  • It increases customer satisfaction – Plus, they feel they’ve made the buying decision on their own. Instead of being manipulated into buying. So they are happier with their purchase.
  • Preselling increases your bottom line – Happy customers ask for refunds much less often. Which means you keep more of your affiliate commissions.

Obviously, it’s important to presell. You increase your profits. And produce happier customers. Everybody wins!

Now, here’s how preselling works:

You’ve learned the importance of preselling. And hopefully you’re convinced you need to start doing it. So, it’s time to break down how it works. Like we talked about before, it’s an art. And it’s a science.

Becoming an artist

First, you have to gain the trust of your reader, so they let their guard down. This can only be accomplished by providing actual value in the information you’re presenting. The art of this is to provide enough information to be of value, but not enough to satiate the hunger. The idea is that they want more and the sales page you send them to gives them more. Plus they’re not guarded, so they’re more open and likely to purchase the product.

The science component

There’s also a specific formula you need to follow.

The first is how you present the information. You need to know where you’re going before you begin. Your end goal is to make a sale of the product you’re preselling. There are two ways to accomplish this with great content. One way is to give them enough info to whet the appetite, but not enough to satisfy it. The other method is to explain all the details and expose how difficult it is to do what you’re explaining. Whichever method, you send them to a product website that solves the problem you just created.

Next, you have to use “convert linking” methods. Instead you link directly to the product sales page. This increases your clicks. But how will you earn affiliate commissions if you don’t use your affiliate link? Well, that’s part of the science of this whole process. You use an image tag to cookie your reader before they leave your site.

You also want to link to the sales page from inside your article’s content. It’s habitual to click on words and phrases that are hyperlinked. And when the words are in context like this, it makes perfect sense for your reader to click them.

Putting all of this together creates a powerful affiliate marketing formula for success.

OK, here’s the not-so-good news:

Doing all of this right is really hard! Let’s look at the skills required to pull it off: Awesome content. The entire process depends on your being able to provide useful information to your readers. To do that you have to have enough information to be valuable and be able to present it in a useful way. Preselling skills. Yes, you must providing useful content. You also have to present the info in a way that provides real value. While at the same time making them want more. Or make the information so overwhelming they realize they can’t do it on their own.

Choosing your products. You also need to determine what products you’ll be preselling. If you can manage to get the article written well. Your efforts are completely wasted if you don’t pick a winning product.

Technical skills. And finally, you need the technical know-how to embed your image tag and make sure you get credit for the sale. This is fairly simple – you use a 1 X 1 image and set the “source” to your affiliate link. (Just don’t mess it up. Otherwise, you won’t get credit for your sales.)

Summary:

Now you’re armed with the information needed to effectively presell. And doing this increases your affiliate commissions by over 500%! It’s absolutely critical to do this every time – and to do it correctly. Take action now. Put in the effort to reap the greater rewards.

Membership Niche Selection Tips

In order to make sure your membership business is profitable, you have to select the right market. Here’s how.

Number 1 – Discover Niches with Fanatics

The first step in developing a profitable membership business is to find a market with fanatics in it. Fanatic is defined as someone with an irrational enthusiasm. These are the people you’re looking for because they are so enthusiastic they’re willing to spend money on their topic of fanaticism. OK, so we know what a fanatic is, but how do we find them?

  • Look at magazine racks. This is an often overlooked, yet extremely simple way to find niches that people are interested in. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to run a print magazine. So if you see one on the shelves you know they are making money, which means that there are enough people interested in what they’re saying to make it profitable. This is a very good indication that it’s a good niche for you to go into.
  • You’ve got lots of opportunities every day to see what people are interested in. Just pay attention to what people talk about on the radio, at social gatherings, at the store or restaurants and anywhere in public. If people are talking about it, they are interested in it. And this means there may be a market for information about it.
  • Again, looking in the physical world for clues you can tell there are lots of people interested in something if there are clubs and organizations around the topic. Conventions are expensive to hold and attend, so if one if going on that’s another strong indication of a good niche to go into with your membership website.
  • What about your interests and hobbies? If you’re interested in something, it’s highly likely others are, too. And, as an added bonus, it’s much more fun to build a business around things you’re interested in.
  • One simple and easy way to find out what’s hot is Google Trends. Google Trends tells you the most popular current search terms. The reason people are searching Google for info on these topics is because they are interested. And the fact that it’s made it into Google Trends tells you LOTS of people are interested. Hot topics that people are excited about make great niches for your membership website.

Step 2 – Determine the financial feasibility

After selecting a possible niche to build your membership site around, the next step is to find out if it’s a profitable niche to be in. An easy way to determine this is to figure out if anyone else is making money in this niche.

Here’s how to determine if you can make money in your chosen niche

  • Find out if there are blogs or forums related to it. Just search Google for “YourNiche blog” & “YourNiche forum” and see what comes up. This tells you there are people who are actively interested in your niche.
  • Search Amazon, Google shopping and eBay to see if people are creating and selling products in the niche. What you’re trying to figure out is if anyone is making money in this niche, and if people are selling products it means they are making money.
  • Watch Google Adwords for a period of time and look for ads the run again and again. Adwords ads are expensive, so people only run them repeatedly if they are profitable. And to be profitable, they have to be selling products and making money.

Finally – Figure out your barrier to entry

Once you’ve found a niche and figured out that there is money to be made in, you need to determine if you can break into this niche. Here are some things to look at to figure this out:

  • Figure out what kinds of products people are interested in. If it’s mostly physical products, coaching and live seminars, then it will be harder to break into this niche. That’s because it’s much easier to build a membership business around information vs. any other kind of product.
  • Competition. How many other people are trying to sell to this market? You want to start in a market that’s not completely saturated with competitors.
  • Unless the market is just so big that it doesn’t matter how many competitors there are, you want to limit the competition. So evaluate the size vs. the competition.
  • How ready is the market for marketing messages, and how willing are the fanatics to buy. Some niches are made up of people who require lots information and have a very long lead time, and some markets are filled with people who will spend lots of money right now.

At this point you’ve figured out what niche you’re going into. You found your fanatics, you know they spend money and you’re confident there’s room in the market for you. Traffic is King, but this comes FIRST

Traffic is useless . . . unless…

Before you begin trying to get traffic to your site, you need to do your keyword research first. The reason this is so important is that you are going to be building content and traffic sources for specific keywords. This means it’s critical to select your keywords properly.

Here are the important considerations for your research:

  • Are the keywords you’re interested in attainable? Take a look at the “strength” of others websites (and how many) are already targeting these keywords.
  • What kinds of visitors do these keywords bring? If you don’t do your research you’ll end up with a lot of traffic that doesn’t buy from you. This is not what you’re looking for.
  • Will these keywords bring affiliates? Nothing brings more buyers like an army of affiliates. So, it’s important to also target affiliates in the keywords you go after.

Although this is an essential step, doing it all by hand can take a very long time. And hiring an expert is very expensive. Which is why practically none of your competitors will do this! The smartest marketers use website traffic software to automate this and other aspects of their business. Using tools like this speed up the process and improve your results, too!

People love filling in surveys. And if you make it interesting, other people will post your survey on their website. They benefit by getting free content for their site and you get a link to your site under the survey. The beauty of this is that it generates website visitors for you with no work on your part. Most people think surveys are just for collecting data, but in this case you don’t even care about the answers. Just make the question interesting enough that people will want to share it with their own visitors.

“Answer” Sites

These sites, like answers.yahoo.com are filled with people asking and answering questions for each other. But, like the surveys, that’s not why you’re going to pay attention to these sites. The other thing they can be used for is to get traffic to your site, leads for your business and sales! Of course, the process of digging through these sites and pulling out the content info of leads for your business is very time consuming. But a much smarter method is to use website traffic software to do it for you. This allows you to do the things in your business that can’t be automated and let the software just give you the leads.

Video Sharing Sites

Video is huge and sites like YouTube and Vimeo are extremely popular. These sites generate massive traffic and people watch over 2 billion videos a day on YouTube alone . If you’re not taking advantage of this rich source of website traffic, then you are really missing out.

Even if you don’t think you can make a good video. It’s really easy to just start with an article or something you’ve already written. And use free screen capture software to record yourself reading it. I’ve even seen software that will automatically convert an article to a video!
